“Young people do not make the most sex, and the guilt would of videogames: this is the conclusion to which it arrived to a study published in the Washington Post, according to which a young person out of four has no more sex, with abstinence long even a year”.
These are the opening words of an article published by The Messenger that has inevitably attracted the attention of both fans of video games and those who would be suspicious of the toys are electronic. Similar articles have also appeared on other portals such as TGCOM24, and unfortunately, as too often happens, is situated opposite to the information reported in the mid and omissions which you should absolutely check. But let’s go with order.
The study to which reference is made in these and other articles, dating back to march of this year (mysteriously in Italy is making to discuss just now), and is derived from the statistics obtained from the university of Chicago thanks to the General Social Survey, a survey biennial, which collects data on the habits of the american population. The fact that the data focus on the USA is omitted in the articles, but this is not the most serious problem. The problem lies in the causes pointed out, and those that are not even remotely mentioned.
Taking a look at the cold numbers, the 23% of adults said that they had had sex in the last year or longer, with the majority of this percentage is composed of men on the twenty. The number of men who have not had relations for more than a year has more than doubled over the last ten years and the number of men under the age of 30 who has never had sex increased from 8% in 2008 to 27% in 2018.
In other words, yes, young people actually have a sex life much less active but Jean Twenge, professor of psychology at San Diego State University, also cited by articles in the Italian press, and intervened in the Washington Post, does not indicate, of course, the video games, Netflix and the entertainment as the main cause.
“There are fewer marriages among the young. There are more people on the twenty who do not live with a partner then in these circumstances I think that less sex is inevitable. Most men between 18 and 34 years of age living in the home of their parents, and when in that condition is probably more complicated to bring a sexual partner into their own bedroom”.
You cite fewer partners fixed, but also a social life, in general, less active. Finally, Twenge talks about technology: “compared to 20 years ago, there are many more activities possible at 22 pm. Streammare, social media, video games and much more”.
Professor Twenge does not deny the impact of technology and video games but also presents a social and cultural context much wider that can not and should not be ignored. Or at least should not.
