Spyro Reignited Trilogy – review

On Nintendo Switch is coming out of the world. The agenda of the latter part of 2019 is to say the least, full of ideas and all are looking for good reasons to optimize the outputs, choosing only those titles worthy of their portfolios. We can give you a hand by telling you that here in this trilogy, Spyro can safely be put in the list of securities to retrieve later.

There may be several reasons. The first thing many of you have probably already played on other platforms and the only possibility to bring your own in portable mode is not enough to justify the purchase. Even more significant is the fact that this edition of the Switches suffers from some problems that make it inferior to the versions PS4/One, not so much in terms of aesthetics, but of enjoyment.

It’s been almost a year since we had to find the cute dragon purple on the console of the current generation. The work done by the boys of the team Toys For Bob on these remake was excellent but since then we all hoped in the arrival of Spyro Reignited Trilogy on the Switch. We were satisfied but the wait was not rewarded by a product at the height of our expectations.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy

  • Developer: Toys for Bob, Sanzaru Games
  • Publisher: Activision
  • Availability: 13 November 2018: PlayStation 4, Xbox One. September 3, 2019: Windows, Switches

The contents of course are the same, no one expected news of any kind in this area. What is perplexing is the way in which the three titles were brought on the hardware Nintendo, apparently without any optimization.

In laptop mode, the three games make their beautiful figure, but almost immediately you notice a few inexplicable drops in frame rate and the annoying effect of “serrated” (true Aliasing) that we hoped to be by now definitely left behind. Already here, the comparison with the almost immaculate versions of PS4 and Xbox One would leave space to some grumbling, but we are still at the beginning.

Spyro_01Aesthetically, the lower resolution of the version Switch is of course less noticeable in portable mode.

The beautiful, or so they say, comes when you insert the hybrid hardware in the dock and the image magically switches to the TV located in the living room (or bedroom, up to you). The “polliciaggio” rises considerably – we passed by the 6.2 of the screen, Switch to the 46 LED Samsung – and the flaws are even more obvious.

At the lower resolution, it becomes apparent even to eyes less trained and the colors are slightly more washed-out. The sporadic loss of fluidity found in portable mode become more frequent, and although they never actually make it unplayable the adventure turn are annoying and can be explained only with a conversion job to say the least, halfhearted.

Needless to say, the best way to make use of the Spyro Trilogy on the Switch with the console so tightly in their own hands. The problems with respect to the mode to docked they become much more bearable and with the pass of the minutes we are carried away more easily in the fairy-tale levels of Spyro the Dragon, Gateway to Glimmer and Year of the Dragon.

Spyro_02the price of the launch is the same, the price/quality ratio that still stands discreetly on the platform Nintendo.

Leaves a little’ bitter taste in the mouth in the absence of any feature that takes advantage of the peculiar characteristics of the platform Nintendo. The touch screen and the Rumble HD were not exploited in any way and this is a real shame.

In terms of content, the amount of material playable on offer is truly remarkable, but for the details we refer you to our review of the last year. As we said at the beginning of this quick review do not feel to advise you dispassionately this version of the Switch of the trilogy unless you’ve avoided the previous right to expect this.

In this case, we can envision a future update that will solve the problems highlighted in the previous lines, and you can make the experience closer to that fun and carefree as the other editions.
