After a sea of rumors, rumors, leaks and denials more or less credible, at the end one of the secrets worst kept video game market was announced: the version more small, light, cheap and exclusively for the portable Nintendo Switch is reality and it is called Nintendo Switch Lite. But that is not all, as it was easy to imagine that some of the new features of the Switch, the Lite will have repercussions on the traditional Switch, and it seems confirmed that Nintendo will replace soon the classic version of the Switch with a equipped with a more powerful hardware.
In this video we explore Nintendo Switch Lite from a technical point of view, focusing on the review of the Tegra X1, its beating heart, the increased autonomy of the battery and a reduction in the amount of heat emitted.
Release date and price
Some information maximum you however, we have to give, just to be all aligned. Switch Lite will come on the market the 20 September at the price of 199 dollars. It is not clear, for now, what will be the price in Italy, but if I had to make a bet bet on a price of 229€. The console is smaller in width, height and size of the screen that goes from 6.2 inches to 5.5 inches, while maintaining the original resolution of 720p. The two biggest differences with the standard Switch, however, is the two joy-with which they can no longer be dropped, but are an integral part of the chassis, and the incompatibility with the dock, or with the possibility to connect to the TV, the console becomes, in fact, a laptop and everything. Switch Lite is, indeed, the successor to the 3DS.
Are not in many to have noticed that Nintendo has officially shown with a comparative that theautonomy of the battery Switch Lite passes from the 2 and a half hours – 6 hours and a half of the standard Switch to 3 – 7 hours for the new console. In particular, the legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, which is used as a sort of benchmark official, goes from 3 hours to Switch to the 4-hours Switch-Lite. It is, therefore, a theoretical increase of autonomy of less than 10%, which, however, in conditions of real use, can reach more than 30%. Someone has immediately theorized that the result was attained by changing the battery, and by making better use of the interior spaces of the console to accommodate a larger machine but it is obvious that in reality the reasons are well other.
First of all there is the question of joy-with the characteristic that, therefore, no longer a battery, and do not require to be recharged during the use. In the traditional Switch, a part of the energy was necessarily used by the controller during the use of them. And then there is obviously the review of the Tegra that definitely brought a reduction in fuel consumption, but I will come back to later in the video.
On the other hand, Switch Lite is significantly smaller than the traditional Switch, and therefore the hypothesis of having a bigger battery is really not credible to the extent that the engineers of Nintendo have been able to work on the design of the interior of the chassis.
In fact, to be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if it came out, when finally we will be able to get their hands on the new console to open it, and look the components closely, the battery is even smaller than the original.
The new Tegra X1
The other element on which I want to focus is on the new ventilation grill located on the upper part of the console that it becomes significantly smaller in its slits in combination with a reduction of the height of the slots in the rear. This small but important redesign shows how Switch Lite to heat up less and so require less ventilation or otherwise, of a reduced surface area for heat dissipation. Also in this case, it is very likely that the cause of this improvement is the revision of the Tegra X1 mounted in the console that, at this point, really becomes a suspect special on which we hope to have more information as soon as possible. It is indeed clear, and now also assume that Switch Lite does not mounts the same as the Tegra X1 and the Switch original. To be clear, this is not a SoC is completely new, the phantom X2, but a more traditional review the hardware of a processor, which is now in production phase from more than 4 years. A review, which involves, probably, a simple change of the production process, a step that many financial analysts took for granted and that we, ourselves, have often pointed out in the past.
The Tegra X1 is mounted in the traditional switch is that the product is still at 20 nanometers, with a process now obsolete and anti-economic, that probably NVIDIA keeps it going only for a partner as important as Nintendo. Taking advantage of the new console is very likely that the two companies have finally agreed to switch to 16 nanometers with a review of silent in the SoC that brings a significant economic saving, the improvement of the energy consumption and heat production of which I spoke earlier, and, probably, also a performance enhancement.
Without wanting to descend too far into the technical, there is an interesting article from Digital Foundry, which is based on the same considerations, of course, proposing a more detailed analysis, which refers also to the different benchmarks that have appeared on Reddit and Resetera. The Tegra X1 is mounted on a Switch has the model number T210, code-named Logan, while in Switch Lite will find the new T210b01, also known as the T214, the code name for Mariko. But all this change of acronyms and names what does it mean in practice? Beyond the considerations already made on the autonomy and on the heating of the console, we can say little until we will not put your hands on the new Switch Lite but it is not excluded that this review silent could have some impact on performance.
It is clear that we are doing only a number of assumptions are absolutely not confirmed by the real data but this increase in performance , which on paper is absolutely credible and feasible, it may mean that the 20 September we will meet between the hands of a console able to run perfectly all the titles already released without any kind of slowdown in laptop mode, consuming less, and probably with faster loading times.
But the most interesting thing of all the package is that, with high probability, this new revision of the Tegra X1 will be mounted in the traditional Switch, so absolutely silent and not said, as has already happened several times in the past in the console market when the normal progress of the production processes led to a general improvement of the components mounted in the console. With consequences on the noise level and the stability of the same. Some of you may remember the Xbox 360?
A new traditional Switch?
This night the guys from The Verge have got their hands on a change request to the american Federal Communications Commission on the part of Nintendo for a permit to change to class 2 on a product currently on the market. It is a procedure that should allow the company to change some of the structural components of the Switch without having to go through the long approval process of the hardware.
This change would involve a change of the SoC, the system-on-chip, which the Tegra X1, a change the NAND memory (and from here, a possible improvement of the loading times thanks to a faster memory) and consequently a partial redesign of the motherboard to accommodate these two innovations. By connecting all the dots, it seems it is really obvious that Nintendo is about to bring the new components are mounted on Switch Lite is also inside the console is the traditional one. On the other hand, what sense would it have to keep two production lines with different equip two revisions of the same console? Especially if the new SoC works better than the previous one and costs less? Attention, however, we are not suggesting that the phantom Switch Pro is coming. But, more simply, in the coming months, in our opinion, we will also see a revision of the traditional Switch that will not be communicated, with some kind of fanfare or advertising, but that will bring some performance benefits to the new buyers. It is a normal situation of the market and it’s inevitable that Nintendo will follow the same road as the hardware revision silent that the other players in the market follow by time.
I hope I was clear enough in this article and in the video that accompanies it, given that the information were really so many. As usual I ask you to leave me feedback below in the comments and let me know what you think of the Switch Lite and this plausible to review the silent Switch normal.
