From 18 to 22 march 2019 will be held in the GDC 2019, i.e. the Game Developers Conference, an event where developers from around the world gather to discuss the news of the industry at seminars and round tables. For years now, on the sidelines of the event, you play a few side events, of which the best known is theIndependent Games Festival, IGF 2019 for friends, which can be considered as the Oscars of the independent developers. On the evening of 20 march (now San Francisco) will then be allocated the awards for the best of independent productions that are already available or in the output within a short. To know how I selected the games, you can refer to the page of the official regulation of the IGF-2019. Please note that this year the main sponsor of the event is Microsoft, with the program [email protected], a sign of a renewed interest in the scene independent of the colossus of Redmond. Do not miss the support of Valve, which as usual will highlight the selected games on Steam during and in the days following the ceremony.

As you know, the most prestigious award assigned during the evening of the IGF is the Seumas McNally Grand Prize, which takes its name from an indie developer who died of a lymphoma-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2000, soon after receiving the first prize for his last game, Tread Marks, currently downloadable as freeware from GitHub. It happened during the second edition of the IGF, and since then, the name is not changed. Every year there are dozens, when not hundreds, of independent developers hoping to receive it by registering to the competition, in the hope of being recognized for their hard work. At this point we can only see one-to-one candidates for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize 2019, i.e. six games, including will be elected as the independent game of the year.

As it often happens with most of the names will be unfamiliar to most, given that these are securities which are small, often just considered from the information, both the specialized press, both youtuber, twitcher, and the like. It must be said that, in their own way, as they got to the final, they are definitely of the small gems that deserve to be played regardless of victory or not, and then we were in you would give an eye right from the start. But ‘ nuff said and let’s begin.

Do Not Feed The MonkeysDo Not Feed The Monkeys of Fictiorama Studios puts you in the shoes of a voyeur digital, i.e. it asks the player to spy on the life of some virtual people through dozens of surveillance cameras hackerate. The goal is to get as much information as possible to discover what is hidden and, in case, decide to help them or to harm them, so often completely arbitrary (this is the best of the game). The idea that rule Do Not Feed The Monkeys is to give the player a power almost absolute on the existence of unsuspecting people, living like monkeys inside cages virtual are treated as experiments from the laboratory. The tone of the game are still those of the play, but we guarantee that you will not miss the moments truly disturbing.

Hypnospace OutlawHypnospace Outlaw is a simulator of the internet of the ’90s in which the connection to the network occurs via the neural. The player in the shoes of a so-called Hypnospace Enforcer, you must explore a virtual environment that is surreal as it is similar to the one that was the web of the time, going in search of crimes and avoiding at the same time, viruses, adware and clogging his mail box. You can also customize your desktop, go treasure hunting and do many of the typical activities of the time. Developed by four people, Jay Tholen, Mike Lasch, Xalavier Nelson, Jr., Corey Cochran, is a game at the same time nostalgic and innovative; an original experience throughout living.

MinitMinit is an adventure game very you play for sixty seconds at a time. Apparently a japanese role-playing game with graphics, the 2 bit, but soon reveals its conceptual nature and the brilliance of his gameplay that develops within a handful of seconds. The objective of the player is to undo a curse that does indeed take the days just one minute. Developed by four people, Kitty Calis, Jan Willem Nijman, Jukio Kallio and Dominik Johann, Minit is the perfect title against the wear and tear of the modern video games for hundreds of hours when you do the same things.

NoitaNoita of Nolla Games is a platform action roguelike that introduces a single, immense innovation: each pixel is simulated at the physical level, and responds realistically to the stresses of the character driven by the player and by the other agents present in the game. Of course, the characteristics of the pixel vary depending on the element to which they belong, with the liquids that form a whole which flows in a way that is convincing for the levels and the solids are more or less resistant depending on the material from which they are composed. The effect obtained by the developers of a world is particularly alive and responsive, where to destroy means to see disappear in large chunks of the levels and where the customization takes place in the creation of spells from the effects of the truly unique.

Magnum OpusZachtronics is a development studio famous for having created the puzzle game intelligent, exciting, as complicated. Magnum Opus is no less of previous productions, such as SHENZHEN I/O, Infinifactory and Spacechem, and gives the player the control of an engine of alchemy, which allows you to transmute materials in medicine, precious gems, weapons, and anything else. As all securities of Zachtronics, also Opus Magnum leaves the player free to find its own solutions, allowing them to improvise if necessary, and force the system where possible. The result is a little gem that takes advantage of the basic principles of programming to propose a challenge, intelligent, and unusually rich from the point of view of the narrative is dedicated to those players who want to use the grey matter.

Return of the Obra DinnReturn of the Obra Dinn Lucas Pope is definitely the most well-known of the games on this list, as well as one of the games of the year are also recognized by the industry. For someone stonerà see him in the race for the Seumas McNally Grand Prize, but it has to be said that is developed by a single person and is a indie, all of the effects (paradoxically, a lot more of titles such as Minit and Do Not Feed the Monkeys that of the publisher). For those not familiar, we briefly describe: in the role of an insurance agent and you have to climb on board a merchant ship adrift reappeared after years in the vicinity of the port of Falmouth. We are in 1807, and our goal is to reconstruct what happened aboard the ship, giving a face to the dead, after being penetrated in their memories. The result is a brilliant game for investigation by the graphic style very special. If you want to learn more, read our review of Return of the Obra Dinn.
